Accountability court allows Dr Faisal Sultan to examine Imran Khan

 Thursday May 11, 2023

The court allows Khan's wife, a blood relative, to meet him.

He says Dr. Sultan can form a medical team to check Khan.
Khan's lawyer Khawaja Haris also facilitated a meeting with Khan.

ISLAMABAD: An Islamabad court hearing the Al-Qadir Trust case against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has allowed his family and doctor Dr. Faisal Sultan to meet the former prime minister who is currently in the custody of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

The decision came in a detailed written verdict of the accountability court on Thursday, which sent the PTI chief to NAB custody for eight days.

The national anti-corruption watchdog obtained an eight-day physical detention of Khan in the land corruption case during a hearing on police lines in Islamabad, which was granted a "one-time exception" status by the court.

On Wednesday, sources told Geo News that Khan's legal team was initially denied permission to meet the party chief ahead of the hearing; however, once the hearing began, Khan met his lawyers Khawaja Haris, Faisal Chaudhry, Ali Gohar and Ali Bukhari.

“In view of the objections of the accused and his counsel, it is ordered that Dr. Faysal of Shoukat Khanun Hospital may engage a medical team to examine the accused or examine them if necessary. The wife and blood relatives of the accused will be allowed to meet him during NAB custody […],” the judgment read.

The court also directed the officials concerned to arrange a meeting with Khan "on phone/mobile". In addition, Khan's lawyer, Haris, was also allowed to meet Khan at reasonable times during his remand.

Imran Khan declared medically 'fit'

During yesterday's hearing, sources said that the medical report submitted by NAB showed that Khan was fit and did not complain of any pain to the doctors who examined him.

A report submitted by the board headed by Dr Rizwan Taj showed that Khan's blood pressure, sugar level and heart rate were normal after repeated tests.

However, Khan expressed fears that he could be killed by slow poisoning in prison.

As the former prime minister expressed his fear, he informed the court of liability that the authorities "give an injection that causes a person to die slowly" and asked the Sultan for medical treatment.

Khan was detained by Rangers on Tuesday - becoming the seventh former prime minister to be arrested in Pakistan - on the orders of NAB, the autonomous anti-graft agency, in connection with a corruption case. He was then transferred to her office in the garrison town of Rawalpindi for questioning.

In a surprise move, Khan's imprisonment was declared lawful by the Islamabad High Court later in the day, while the Supreme Court also dismissed the challenge to the arrest.

The cricketer-turned-politician faces a raft of court cases and was also indicted today in the Toshakhan case - which involved allegations that he failed to properly disclose income from the sale of government donations from his time in office.
