An artificial intelligence (AI) startup called Humane, founded five years ago by former Apple designers Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, on Thursday unveiled a $699 lapel pin as its first product.
The Humane AI Pin offers voice control to search for information, send text messages and make calls – all functions that can easily replace your smartphone.
In addition, it includes a laser display that allows you to use your palm as a small screen to see the time, date and everything around you.
"There are no wake-up words, so it's not always listening or always recording," Chaudhri said at the start of a 10-minute introductory video on the company's website.
"It doesn't actually do anything until you engage with it, and your engagement comes through your voice, touch, gesture or laser ink display," he added.
Additionally, customers will have to pay a $24 monthly data subscription, according to T-Mobile, because the device, unlike a smartwatch, is not tied to a smartphone.
The company raised more than $200 million in a $100 million funding round in March, with contributions from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff.
The AI startup also revealed that orders for the Humane AI Pin will begin on November 16.
In a video posted Thursday, Chaudhri and Bongiorno demonstrated some of the device's features and discussed the technology, which is powered by a Qualcomm chipset, CNBC reported.
The AI Pin, as shown in the video, has a built-in speaker and a camera that flashes when activated. It can take photos or videos that can be viewed on the Humane web app.
The device can also translate spoken conversations from Spanish to English in real time.
The device can also allow users to access AI services over the internet, with companies such as Microsoft, Google and OpenAI contributing to the platform.
Users can request music or information from sci-fi movies, with large language models providing the answers. Access to music requires a Tidal subscription.
Device Assistant can also summarize daily calendars, messages and health data.
