Islamabad (Urdu Point. News advertisement. December 11, 2023) Minister of State in the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs V Muralidharan told the Indian Parliament that 403 Indian students studying abroad have died since 2018. These deaths occurred due to various causes including natural causes and accidents.
Muralidharan, in a written reply to a question of opposition party Trinamool Congress member Mosam Benazir Noor, said that during the last six years, the highest number of deaths among Indian students studying in thirty-four countries occurred in Canada, followed by Britain.
He said that 91 Indian students died in Canada. While during the same period, 48 students died in Great Britain, 36 in America, 35 in Australia, 21 in Ukraine, 20 in Germany, 14 in Cyprus and 10 each in Italy and Philippines.

Union Minister Muralitharan said that the safety and security of Indian students studying abroad is one of the top priorities of the Government of India.

He said that when an unexpected accident occurs, the concerned Indian authorities immediately contact the concerned authorities of the host country and try to ensure proper investigation of the accident and punishment of the culprits.
He further informed that heads and officials of Indian embassies and missions regularly visit colleges and universities and interact with Indian students studying there.

He said that consular assistance is provided to students facing any problem. Apart from this, medical care, accommodation and food facilities are also provided in emergency situations.
Cause of most deaths of Indian students in Canada?
When the spokesperson of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs was asked what is the cause of such a large number of deaths of Indian students studying abroad, he said that Indian students go to study abroad in large numbers.
Speaking to the media, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, "I don't think this is an issue that needs to be taken up at the government level. Yes, there have been some individual incidents that were wrong...our consulates. We contact the families of the affected students and we also take up such cases before the local authorities."
In response to a question regarding the large number of student deaths in Canada, Arindam Bagchi said that Indian students go there more than other countries.

Bagchi said, "Canada is at the top in terms of deaths of Indian students studying abroad, but I would like to request you to also see that more students go there than other countries. Apart from that, we should also look at Whether these deaths were due to violence or accidents. I don't think this is a matter that should be taken up at the government level."
