KARACHI: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned provinces to prepare for extreme weather events - including intense heat waves, extraordinary snow melt, landslides, flash floods, forest fires and cyclones - reported The News citing an official letter from disaster management authority.
The official letter informed all provincial governments of the emergency preparations needed to face the likely extreme weather events between April and October.
NDMA has issued regionally specific preparedness guidelines to all disaster management (DM) authorities and stakeholders to release regionally specific alerts and impact-based advisories for early proactive preparations.
Space and Upper Atmospheric Research Commission (SUPARCO) and Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD) have been asked to monitor changes in "GLOF" locations vulnerable to melting glaciers and continuously assess the likely impact of these developments on downstream river flows in water reservoirs and issue monitoring reports with a periodicity of fourteen days.
Apart from PDMA Sindh, Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) have been informed that PMD has predicted higher temperatures in northern areas and along the coastal belt during May-July.
Rain-storm forecast
Besides, the NDMA on Sunday issued a warning notice to all concerned federal and provincial departments to ensure disaster preparedness measures after the PMD issued a rain-storm forecast from May 22 to 26.
The advisory said the PMD forecast that a westerly wave is likely to enter the western and upper parts of the country on May 22, which is likely to persist throughout the week - till May 26 - resulting in intermittent rainfall.
Under the influence of this weather system, dust/thunderstorm and rain is expected over Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) from May 22 (evening/night) to May 26 with possible hailstorms (and isolated heavy falls). GB, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab.
Additionally, the above weather is likely to prevail in Sargodha, Mianwali, Layyah, Khushab, Bhakkar, Faisalabad, Jhang, T T Singh, Sheikhupura, Nankana, Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Narowal, Sialkot, Kasur, Pakpattan, Okara, Sahiwal, La , R.Y. Khan, Bahawalnagar, Multan, D.G. Khan and Rajanpur and also in Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT).
On the other hand, Sindh and Balochistan are expected to experience wind dust or thunderstorms and rainfall from May 22 (tonight) to May 24.
