DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Two policemen were martyred while three others sustained injuries in a terrorist attack on an oil and gas company in Dera Ismail Khan (DI Khan), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday morning.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), the terrorist attack took place in Drazanda tehsil DI Khan, killing and injuring police personnel.

The injured policemen and the bodies of the other two were taken to the hospital, the DSP said. He added that one of the police officers is in critical condition.

The DSP said the police officers were deployed for the security of the oil company, adding that a search was on for the suspects.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari condemned the attack in DI Khan, saying that strict measures are needed to completely eliminate terrorists from the country.

Fifth attack in 5 days

This was the fifth terrorist attack to take place in DI Khan in as many days.

On Sunday, suspected militants attacked Gul Imam Police Station in Tank area, which was repelled by security personnel. One of the police officers was injured in the attack.

Armed militants attacked the police station, leading to a gunfight between the police personnel and the attackers. The gunmen then fled the area.

On the same day, another policeman was injured in a terrorist attack on a check post in Roori area of Kulachi tehsil. Police said the assailants used small and heavy weapons in the shootout, after which they managed to flee.

On Friday, at least six people were killed and over 30 injured, including two policemen, in a blast targeting a police van in DI Khan's Tank Adda area.

The vehicle was on its way from Ijaz Shaheed police lines to Kulachi tehsil when it was hit by a remote-controlled blast.

In another blast near a police and army convoy on Friday, an officer was martyred in the Takwara area of Kulač.

Pakistan is facing a daunting challenge of terrorism as militant attacks have increased in the last few months.

The Center for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) said in a report released in October that security forces lost at least 386 personnel in the first nine months of 2023, an eight-year high.

In the third quarter of 2023, about 445 people lost their lives and 440 were injured in up to 190 terrorist attacks and counter-terrorism operations.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan were the primary centers of violence, accounting for nearly 94% of all deaths and 89% of attacks (including terrorist incidents and security force operations) recorded during the period.
