The announcement issued by the ADB stated that the loan amount will be used to modernize the power distribution system. According to media reports, the transmission system will be upgraded and modernized to meet the growing demand for electricity in the country under the Asian Development Bank’s Power Distribution Strengthening Project.

The capacity of distribution companies to provide sustainable power will increase. In the initial phase, support will be provided to three power distribution companies. LESCO, MEPCO and SEPCO will play an effective role for sustainable energy in their regions.

The aim of the project is to reduce energy losses during transmission and protect the infrastructure from climate change and natural disasters.

According to the announcement, more than 300,000 advanced metering infrastructure will be installed under the project. The installation of data management and communication systems is also part of the project. This project will facilitate the three major distribution companies Lahore Electric Supply Company, Multan Electric Power Company and Sukkur Electric Power Company, which will make energy transmission in these areas more efficient and sustainable.

Under the project, monitoring systems will be installed on more than 15,500 online transformers, the systems will be installed in Lahore, Multan and Sukkur Electric Supply Companies. Yevgeny Zhukov, Director General for Central and West Asia of the Asian Development Bank, says that this project is part of ADB’s ongoing efforts to address the challenges facing Pakistan’s power sector.

The announcement said that the voltage of 4 grid stations of SEPCO will be increased from 66 kV to 132 kV, which will help reduce losses in the transmission system and meet the demand for electricity. The aim of strengthening the transmission system is to meet the increasing demand for electricity, upgrading and modernizing the transmission system is also an important objective of the project. Under the project, at least 332,000 advanced metering infrastructure, data management and communication systems and 15,800 online transformer monitoring systems will be installed in LESCO, MEPCO and SEPCO, while the voltage of four grid stations of Sukkur Electric Power Company (SEPCO) will be upgraded from 66 kilowatts (kV) to 132 kilovolts, which will not only reduce losses in the transmission system but also meet the increasing demand for electricity. At least 25 grid stations will be constructed and modernized in LESCO, important and modern equipment will also be provided in these grid stations, high-loss 11 kV feeders will be replaced with modern cables, in addition, the layout of feeder lines with losses will also be improved.
