An Indian Army helicopter carrying Indian Chief of Defense General Bipin Rawat and his family has crashed in the state of Tamil Nadu, killing at least five people, according to the state's forest minister.


Authorities have not identified the dead, and there has been no official word on the health of General Rawat or his family.


The military helicopter crashed Wednesday between Solver and Coimbatore and crashed in a mountainous area. According to the Indian Air Force, the helicopter that crashed was a Russian-made and Mi-17V5 model.

According to ANI, the helicopter was en route to Wellington from the Indian Air Force base at Solur near Coimbatore and had a total of 14 people on board, including crew members, including General Rawat, his wife, General Rawat K. Includes assistants and their staff.

According to BBC Hindi, Tamil Nadu Forest Minister Ram Chandran, after visiting the site, said that five of the 14 people aboard the helicopter had been confirmed dead while two others were in critical condition.

The latest images from the crash site show the helicopter wreckage on fire and locals trying to put it out.

However, K. Ram Chandran did not disclose the names of those killed, nor has there been any official statement about General Rawat's condition.

The state-run broadcaster Dordarshan News quoted officials as saying three people had been evacuated from the scene and the bodies and injured had been taken to a military hospital in Wellington.The Indian Air Force says an investigation into the crash has been ordered.

According to All India Radio, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will give more details about the incident in Parliament on Thursday while meeting General Rawat's family at his residence in New Delhi.

According to AIR, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has also asked Air Chief VR Chaudhry to reach the crash site.

The news agency PTI quoted Union Minister Anurag Thackeray as saying that information about the helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu would be given by the concerned ministry.

Rawat, a former student of the National Defense Academy and Indian Military Academy, joined the 5th Battalion of the 11th Gurkha Rifles of the Indian Army in December 1978. An anti-insurgency expert, he has held various positions on both the Chinese and Pakistani borders. He has also served in the Congo as a United Nations stabilization mission.

General Rawat is credited with the 2015 cross-border operation against militants linked to the state of Nagaland in Myanmar.

In a controversial move in December 2016, the Indian government appointed him as the 27th Chief of Army Staff of the country's evil army, giving him precedence over two senior lieutenant generals, Parveen Bakhshi and PM Horse.

He has received numerous awards during his career spanning over 40 years.
