The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified social connection as an important global public-health priority, highlighting the need for governments and communities to address loneliness and social isolation.
What does loneliness really mean?
Loneliness does not necessarily mean being physically alone. A person can live with family, attend university, work in a busy office or have hundreds of online contacts and still feel disconnected.
At its core, loneliness is the feeling that a person's relationships do not provide the level of connection, understanding or companionship they need.
This distinction is important because social isolation and loneliness are related but different. There is no single solution to loneliness.

Schools and universities can create environments where students have opportunities to build friendships. Workplaces can encourage healthier social interaction rather than focusing exclusively on productivity. Communities can provide clubs, volunteering opportunities, sports activities and other spaces where people can meet regularly.
For individuals, maintaining contact with family and friends, joining community activities and reaching out to someone who may be isolated can also make a difference.
Is loneliness really the next global health crisis?
Calling loneliness the “next global health crisis” is a powerful description, but the evidence is more nuanced.
Researchers continue to study how loneliness differs between countries, age groups and social circumstances. Not every person who feels lonely will develop a serious health condition, and loneliness itself is not a disease.
However, the growing body of evidence shows that persistent loneliness and social isolation deserve greater attention because of their links with physical and mental health.
