Police in India say they have foiled a plot by a man to pretend his own death to avoid going back to jail.
Authorities in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh say a 36-year-old man named Sadish Kumar allegedly killed a man and tried to prove the victim's body was his own. The man's wife was his facilitator in this project.
However, police found CCTV footage of Sadish Kumar in which he could be seen carrying his body on a motorcycle.
According to reports, Sadish Kumar was released on parole during the Corona virus outbreak. He is serving a sentence for killing his 13-year-old daughter in 2018.
Some states in India have released prisoners on parole to control the corona virus epidemic due to overcrowding in prisons.
However, Kumar was convinced that the authorities were about to end his parole and so he planned to avoid going to jail again.
Police claim that Sadish Kumar has confessed to killing Doman Ravi Das on November 19. Doman Ravi Das was a man the size of Sadish Kumar and worked as a laborer. He was contracted by Sadish Kumar to repair his house.
However, the next day, Ravi Das's body was found in a nearby plot. His body was burnt and he had Sadish Kumar's identity card in his pocket.
Sadish Kumar's wife later identified the body as her husband's in Delhi, the capital of India.
And apparently they proved that Sadish Kumar was dead but then the police got the news that Sadish Kumar was coming to visit his wife. Police raided their home and arrested the couple.
At a press conference on Sunday, Regional Police Superintendent Eraj Raja praised the performance of his officers.
The couple had a detailed plan but the police solved the murder case," he said. The team will be rewarded for their work.
