A bus crash in western Colombia on Saturday claimed the lives of at least ten people and injured 11 others during a field trip that included students and their instructors, according to the university. A preliminary investigation reveals that the bus driver lost control of the vehicle while it was transporting 26 passengers from Tolima to Quindio. According to police commander Luis Fernando Atuesta, the bus hit a barrier on the side of the Helicoil Bridge in the Quindio region, throwing several people off. "Several passengers were ejected and fell into the abyss," the officer stated, adding that "establish the conditions of this unfortunate accident" were the subject of ongoing investigations. Following "the painful loss of several of our colleagues, students, professors, and administrators" in the accident, Humboldt University in Armenia, Colombia, declared two days of mourning. In a video, university director Diego Fernando Jaramillo Lopez stated that the bus was carrying "22 students, two teachers, and a communications officer." The national highway authority estimates that in 2024, road accidents will account for 22 deaths per day, making them one of the leading causes of death in Colombia.
